Meet Aaron from Germany. As a newly qualified carpenter, he came to Sweden for a three-month Erasmus+ internship at Stucco Maestro in Oxie, outside Malmö.
Tell us a little bit more about Stucco Maestro where you did your internship.
The company I worked for specialises in the restoration of historic buildings, including churches and stone façades. Their main focus is the restoration of stone, the installation of new stone elements, and the production of moulds which are then cast in concrete.
There is also a smaller carpentry and joinery department. This team is responsible for building temporary structures, carrying out repairs, and handling all kinds of work involving wood.
What specific skills or knowledge did you gain during your internship that you didn’t have before?
During my internship, I was able to gain insight into all of the mentioned areas. However, I mainly worked in the wood workshop, as I am a trained carpenter. There, I had the opportunity to take part in many projects and carry out tasks independently, which I enjoyed.
What was the most surprising aspect of living abroad and specifically in Sweden?
Apart from the work experience, living in Sweden was very special. The landscape is beautiful and the people are friendly. What stood out to me most was how helpful people are, especially when you ask for help. Also, standing in a queue is taken very seriously, and pushing ahead is simply not acceptable!
What are the top three must-dos when living in Sweden?
- Spend time outdoors and experience the nature.
- Visit the towns.
- Try traditional Swedish dishes.
Overall, it was a very valuable and enriching experience, both professionally and personally.
