After three months at RSMH (Riksförbundet för social och mental hälsa) in Lund, French interns Yolène and Abigail are ready for new adventures.

Why did you decide to apply for an internship in Sweden?

Yolène: I’m considering moving to Sweden, so I wanted to try working in the social sector to see if it suited me.

Abigail: I had just completed my degree in social work, and while studying, I became very interested in the Scandinavian approach to care, particularly in mental health. While working in France, I had lots of questions about how best to support people with mental health challenges, and RSMH seemed like the perfect place to explore that.

Was the experience what you expected?

Yolène: Absolutely! We learned so much, more than we anticipated. The staff and members welcomed us warmly.

Abigail: It went beyond my already high expectations.

Was there anything that surprised you?

Yolène: RSMH is a place free of judgment. Everyone is allowed to be themselves, speak openly, and do as they please (safely, of course). It completely changed our assumptions about how people live with this invisible disability.

Abigail: And Sweden’s nature is stunning. We went on so many hikes, and the weather wasn’t nearly as terrible as I had imagined.

What is your favourite memory?

Abigail: Many of the members are artists, especially musicians. One of my favourite experiences was watching them play music in the basement. The music created such a strong bond between everyone.

Yolène: Another unforgettable moment was walking across a frozen lake in Stockholm on a bright, sunny day.

Has the experience changed you?

Abigail: Yes, in many ways. It gave me a chance to learn more about myself and what I want from my career and life.

Do you have any advice for people thinking about an internship abroad?

Yolène: Go for it! Don’t be afraid to take the leap. It’s an incredible experience. You’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. And when you’re abroad, explore your surroundings and make the most of every opportunity.
