Guillaume from France did an internship as a front-end developer in Lund and ended up staying in Sweden.
Why did you decide to apply for an internship in Sweden?
My main options were Germany and Sweden. I was keen to experience different work cultures, particularly the flatter hierarchies common in Swedish companies. I also wanted to work in an international environment with colleagues from a variety of nationalities.
Was the experience as you expected?
I didn’t have many expectations, but everything worked out perfectly. The company where I ended up doing my internship were in real need of a front-end developer, so the work itself was exactly as I anticipated and matched my education very well.
Was there anything that surprised you?
The level of responsibility I was given right from the start. Being in a smaller company, I had to rely heavily on my own skills and initiative. I also had the opportunity to witness the company evolve, adopt new ways of working, and develop new methodologies.
What is your best memory?
On a personal level, meeting people from all over the world and making new friends and acquaintances. I also had the chance to travel to Stockholm and Oslo. Beyond that, I discovered and developed new aspects of myself.
Has the experience changed you?
In some ways, yes. I think I am more open-minded and a little less introverted.
I know you were offered a job. Tell me about it.
At first, I hesitated, it was a life-changing decision, and I had many questions and uncertainties. But ultimately, I decided to take the leap. During my internship, I saw the company grow and evolve, and I really wanted to be part of that.
Any tips for people considering an internship abroad?
Go for it! It’s a meaningful experience that can help you grow tremendously as a person. While you’re there, give your best, engage with your colleagues, and immerse yourself in the company culture. Make an effort to meet locals and people from other countries, and enjoy making new friends.
